Dental implant, what it is, types, treatment, price

Dental implants have revolutionized medicine, replacing missing teeth without affecting neighboring teeth.

What is a dental implant?

Dental implant

The dental implant is a modern and effective solution for replacing missing teeth: a titanium medical device, inserted into the jawbone, which functions as an artificial root. Dental implants offer many benefits, including maintaining bone health and the ability to have teeth that look and function like natural teeth.

When the root or nerve of a tooth is damaged, the implant is a perfect solution. The first step for a patient who wants a dental implant is a consultation with the dentist. After a complete and complex examination, the doctor can determine if the patient is a suitable candidate for implants. If the dentist thinks everything is fine, the patient goes ahead with the procedure. After a while, a prosthetic abutment is attached to the dental implant, on top of which the doctor will fix the crown, bridge or dental work that will replace the missing teeth.

Types of dental implants

There are various types of dental implants, each tailored to the specific needs of patients. Among the most common types are endoosseous implants, which integrate directly into the jawbone, and subperiosteal implants, which are suitable for patients with thin jawbones. The choice of implant type depends on several factors, including the patient’s oral health and bone structure.

Dental implants can also be classified by manufacturer and features. The EXCEDENT clinic offers treatment with high-performance dental implants, such as Zimmer TSV, Zimmer Ezthetic, Zimmer Trabecular Metal, Straumann and Bredent.

Recovery after implants

The recovery period after the insertion of a dental implant varies, but most patients can return to daily activities the next day. It is important to maintain rigorous oral hygiene and follow the doctor’s recommendations for a quick and effective healing. Post-operative discomfort is generally minimal and can be managed with pain medication prescribed by the doctor.

Treatment of dental implants

Treatment with dental implants begins with a consultation. Also, before the insertion of dental implants, special X-rays, computerized tomography and a set of blood tests for analgesia are done. Following these tests, our patients receive treatment options, lead times and associated costs. For each patient, the proposed treatment is personalized, so that each implant is placed in the optimal position. The correct placement of the implants is the most important factor influencing the success rate, and our team ensures that there is no doubt from this point of view.

Dental implant insertion is part of the treatment and can be described as a minor oral surgery procedure, performed under local anesthesia, the same type of anesthesia used in routine dental treatments. At EXCEDENT we can also insert the implants with the help of analgosedation, for patients who are anxious about any aspect of the treatment. The more laborious interventions performed under analgesia are easier to bear, and the postoperative recovery is faster and painless.

The dental implant is placed in the bone to replace a natural tooth root. If bone regeneration (bone addition) was planned at the consultation stage, then this step will also be carried out, usually simultaneously with the insertion of the implant. The period of osseointegration of the implant follows, which lasts at least 4 months for the mandible and 6 months for the maxilla, after which the prosthetic abutment is attached. The last stage of the treatment consists in completing the prosthetics by means of crowns, bridges or removable prostheses. Finally, the goal of the treatment was achieved, the functionality and dental aesthetics of the patient being restored.

  • How painful are dental implants?

The procedure of inserting dental implants is not painful, as it is performed under anesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is comparable to that of a tooth extraction and can be effectively managed with analgesic medications. Most patients report a quick recovery and minimal discomfort.

  • How long do dental implants last?

The durability of dental implants is impressive, they can last a lifetime with proper care.

The longevity of an implant depends on several factors, including the patient’s oral health, regular oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups.

Under normal conditions, dental implants can last for decades without significant problems.

  • What is the surgical procedure and how long does it take?

After the mentioned tests, the actual intervention is planned. After a dental implant is inserted into the bone, it is covered with gum, and the patient’s postoperative discomfort is minimal. This oral surgery intervention takes about an hour, sometimes longer if a large number of implants need to be placed.

The patient can then resume their usual activities. There follows a waiting period during which the implant integrates into the bone (osseoincorporation), which is a minimum of 4 months for the mandible and 6 months for the maxilla. In this interval, the patient will be able to benefit from a provisional prosthetic work, which will ensure the functionality and dental aesthetics.

Then, the dental implant is uncovered and a prosthetic abutment is attached to it by screwing. From now on, prosthetics with crowns, bridges or removable prostheses require a few sessions, similar to treatments on natural teeth.

  • How long does a dental implant last?

The lifespan of a dental implant is 7-25 years, depending on the hygiene and health of the patient, the type of implant and the prosthetic work it supports.

  • What risks involve a dental implant?

Insertion of the dental implant presents the same risks related to the general state of health, local risks related to anesthesia, local anatomy and hygiene as any oral surgery intervention.

  • What material are dental implants made of?

Prosthetic implants and abutments are made of high-purity grade 5 titanium, a biocompatible material that integrates well with bone tissue without causing adverse reactions. Titanium is chosen for its strength, durability and excellent compatibility with the human body.

  • How much does dental implant treatment cost?

It depends, of course, on how many dental implants are needed. Every clinical situation is unique.

In Western Europe, the price of an implant is 1,500 – 3,000 euros.

Given that the exact same products are used, in CLINICA EXCEDENT the price can be 500, 700, 850, 1000 and 1,600 euros, depending on the implant brand you choose.
