Dental crown on dental implant
Dental implant crowns are prosthetic devices made of various materials and fixed in the implant by cementing on an implant prosthetic abutment or by screwing directly into the implant.

Dental crown on dental implant
The majority of young patients requesting dental implant treatment have reduced dentition (1-3 teeth) to be replaced. In these cases, the dental implant crown/bridge is made in the EXCEDENT clinic using sintered zirconium computerized technology or the laser-assisted metal-ceramic version, depending on your clinical situation and your wishes.
Frequent asked questions Dental Crown on Dental Implant
Here's what you need to know about the dental crown on the implant.
Book NowThe advantages and disadvantages of the zirconium crown on the implant in the masticatory area
- increased aesthetics for cemented dental crowns.
- increased resistance at a lower thickness than the metal-ceramic crown, if the teeth are small.
- less chromatic and aesthetic individualization possibilities for zirconium monolithic crowns.
- no possibility of repair in case of fracture. It needs to be completely redone.
When is a metal-ceramic dental crown recommended on a dental implant?
The metal-ceramic dental crown on the implant is especially recommended in the lateral areas, because there the masticatory force is greater and the resistance is very important.
Advantages and disadvantages of cementing the dental crown on the implant
- improved aesthetics: practically the crown looks exactly like a natural tooth.
- increased mechanical resistance: the absence of the screw hole makes the ceramic layer much more resistant to fractures.
- better stability in the area of the molars than the screwed crown
- recommended for individual work (on an implant)
- recommended both in the front and side areas.
- incomplete removal of cement immediately after fixation increases the risk of peri-implantitis.
- requires a larger vertical space (crown height over 8 mm), to have sufficient friction on the prosthetic abutment and prevent descimentation.
Advantages and disadvantages of screwing the crown onto the dental implant
- accessibility to the implant at any time after fixation.
- absence of the risk of peri-implantitis.
- worse esthetics due to the screw access hole, which is covered with composite and is grayer than the layering ceramic.
- lower fracture resistance of the ceramic in the vicinity of the screw hole.
- risk of frequently unscrewing the screw in the molar area or even breaking it in the implant.
- not recommended for individual work (one implant), neither in the frontal area nor in the lateral area.
- it is the only solution for small teeth or vertical spaces below 8 mm between the arches (between the teeth), when the cementation does not hold due to the too low height of the prosthetic abutment.
When is a dental zirconia crown recommended on an implant?
The ceramic crown on zirconium on a dental implant is recommended both in the frontal area (due to its increased aesthetics) and in the lateral area where the space between the teeth (between the arches) is too small and does not allow the application of 2 layers of material (metal and ceramic).
Advantages and disadvantages of zirconium crown on implant on visible front teeth
- aesthetics superior to the metal-ceramic crown
- sometimes requires a customized titanium-based computerized zirconium prosthetic abutment.
- the zirconium abutment improves the gingival aesthetics of the implant, because the gray shadow of the metal is no longer visible.
- higher price than for metal-ceramics due to computerized technology. See here the page Tariffs.
- possibilities of aesthetic and gingival individualization increased by the addition of ceramic over the zirconium infrastructure.
How is the metal-ceramic dental crown fixed on the implant?
The metal-ceramic dental crown on the implant can be fixed by cementation or by screwing, each method having advantages and disadvantages.
Dental crowns bonded to dental implants
Total dental bridges consist of dental crowns solidarized on dental implants. They restore an entire arch and replace full acrylic dentures in patients wearing mobile work.
What kind of dental crowns can be placed on dental implants so as to restore an entire arch?
Technology moderna has provided us with several possibilities depending on the clinical situation of each patient and the goal pursued:
Temporary dental crowns on dental implants
These crowns are made of PMMA resin by computerized technology. They are used during the transition period from the insertion of dental implants to the final work, for 4-12 months, to conform the gum for aesthetic purposes.
These dental crowns also have the role of testing the aesthetic, phonetic and masticatory solution at a lower cost than the final crown, for the safety of the final result.
The provisional dental crown on the implant contributes to the systematization of the bone around the dental implants according to functional criteria, after their osseointegration, because it transmits less forces to the bone than the final crown.
Dental crowns on multiple dental implants
Dental bridges that restore an entire arch are made in the same way as single dental crowns, which we talked about above.
If the dental implants are relatively parallel, the full bridge can be cemented to the dental implants. This situation is quite common in the mandible, if the bone supply is also adequate.
If the dental implants are not parallel, the work will be able to be fixed by screwing into them with the help of special systems (multiunits). This solution is applied in all fast and fixed rehabilitations, subnasal, pterygoid or zygomatic dental implants.
Composite resin hybrid superstructures for full bridges on implants
The most modern technologies for making total bridges on dental implants use lightweight materials taken from aeronautical technology.
BioHPP resins and BRECAM monolithic structures offer increased strength and aesthetics at a very low weight of the prosthetic work.
Advantages and disadvantages of composite resin crowns on dental implants
- crowns with metal infrastructure and BRECAM monolithic resin are the strongest combination with the lowest weight of the work. A total bridge may be only 50g, but a higher cost than a metal-ceramic bridge!!
- crowns with metal infrastructure and added composite are the least resistant to fracture and change color over time.
- BRECAM monolithic dental bridges have the best mechanical results on the frontal area, but less aesthetic than ceramic or zirconium.
- BioHPP and BRECAM dental bridges are much more elastic than classic metal-ceramic or zirconium ones and that is why the extensions fracture more quickly.
