Dental braces - What it is, Types, Treatment
Braces are designed to gradually straighten teeth and realign them into a normal bite pattern, eliminating problems caused by malocclusion.
What is a dental appliance?
Dental braces
A brace is an orthodontic medical instrument used to correct the position of the teeth, in the case of misaligned teeth.
Specifically, braces are designed to gradually straighten teeth and realign them into a normal bite pattern, eliminating problems caused by malocclusion.
At the EXCEDENT Clinic, patients often benefit from braces treatment, due to the impressive results and reasonable prices. These treatments are intended to solve both aesthetic and functional problems.
Treatment with dental appliances
The teeth are anchored in the periodontal tissues (gums, alveolar bone, ligaments, etc.), which respond to the pressure exerted by the braces. These tissues compress or stretch, which means that gradually the teeth will move into the desired position. The jawbone then naturally adjusts to the new position of the teeth.
This non-invasive treatment does not affect the patient’s natural teeth and also helps maintain overall oral health.
To decide if the braces are suitable for you, the specialist orthodontists from the EXCEDENT Clinics will start by assessing your general state of oral health.
Next, they perform a clinical examination, which includes a digital scan of the teeth and a radiological examination.
Finally, they will propose a treatment plan tailored to your clinical and financial situation. The duration of orthodontic treatment varies according to each patient, but generally the braces are worn for a period of 6 months to 3 years.
The main factors that determine the duration are:
- The specifics of the situation;
- How healthy are the teeth, gums and supporting bone;
- Patient commitment to this process.
When you benefit from orthodontic treatment at EXCEDENT, regular check-ups are recommended. They ensure that the braces continue to function properly and help the doctor monitor treatment and make necessary adjustments.
Types of dental appliances
Orthodontic treatment of the previously mentioned anomalies can be done with a variety of dental appliances, which can be classified into two main categories: fixed and mobile.
Invisible dental appliances – SPARK Aligner
The most modern orthodontic treatment technique is represented by aligners and does not use brackets! SPARK aligners use multiple sets of clear trays that change every 2 weeks, gradually straightening the teeth. These braces are manufactured using computerized technology, starting from the starting position of the teeth to the desired one. It is a very physiognomic method, these gutters being practically invisible. The duration of wearing SPARK gloves for an optimal result is 20-22 hours a day.

Fixed dental appliances
Fixed dental appliances are orthodontic devices used to correct dental malocclusions, i.e. incorrect positions of the teeth and jaw. They are composed of several elements permanently fixed on the teeth during the orthodontic treatment, which cannot be removed by the patient.
Mobile dental appliances
Movable braces, also known as removable braces, are orthodontic devices that can be removed and reinserted into the mouth by the patient. They are used to correct mild to moderate malocclusions and to guide the proper development of the jaws and teeth in children.
Movable braces are customized for each patient and can be adjusted to exert the necessary pressure on the teeth and jaws in order to achieve the desired alignment. They are very effective in the treatment of problems such as crowded teeth, diastemas (spaces between the teeth), as well as in the correction of occlusion and jaw development problems.
The advantages of removable braces include the possibility of removal for cleaning, comfort and fewer dietary restrictions compared to fixed braces. However, their effectiveness largely depends on the cooperation and commitment of the patient to wear the appliance according to the orthodontist’s instructions.
Treatment with removable dental appliances can vary in duration, depending on the complexity of the case and the specific treatment objectives.
Who is a good candidate for braces?
Dental braces are recommended if you want to correct dental imperfections while keeping your natural teeth.
You are a good candidate for braces if:
- You have misaligned, crowded, crooked, spaced or uneven teeth.
- You have malocclusion problems, ie related to the bite pattern: overbite, open bite, underbite or crossbite.
- You have jaw problems: narrow or misaligned jaw.
