Scaling is one of the most prophylactic procedures that is practiced under ordinary conditions withoutany special preparing. Scaling is the procedure of removing calculus and microbial plaque from dental surfaces.
Calculus or Tartar is a form of hardened dental plaque. It is caused by precipitation of minerals from saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in plaque on the teeth. This process of precipitation kills the bacterial cells within dental plaque, but the rough and hardened surface that is formed provides an ideal surface for further plaque formation. This leads to calculus buildup, which compromises the health of the gingiva (gums).
There are two types: the over-gingival, white-yellowish and is easily visible and the sub-gingival, has a dark color that irritates the gums and causes them to bleed.
The rhythm of tartar formation depends on:
Dental calculus occurs at any age, on both permanent and temporary dentition. however, with age the amount of calculus increases.
4-6 months after the initiation of calculus deposition, it reaches a maximum accumulation level, so it is recommended to do scaling every 6 months.
Ultrasound scaling is one of the simplest dental procedures, is minimally invasive and is recommended to all patients. The tip of the scaling handpiece produces ultrasonic vibrations that cause a total removal of the tartar from the teeth surfaces.
Advantages of ultrasonic scaling:
Ultrasonic scaling is followed by a professional brushing made with special brushes and pastes.
Professional brushing has the purpose of polishing dental surfaces previously cleaned from calculus, or if it was not preceded by a scaling, the professional brushing removes the microbial plaque from the dental surfaces. In addition, depending on the type of paste used by the dentist, dental brushing can also remove pigmented deposits (stains) from the teeth.
The polishing pastes contain fine particles of calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, fluoride salts, tin fluoride which has a desensitising effect for sensible teeth.
In the case of dentinal hypersensitivity after scaling, it is advisable to apply a desensitising prophylactic paste or professional fluoride application.
Ultrasonic scaling and professional brushing are complemented in a complete hygienic session of using the AIR-FLOW jet. Thus, fine sodium bicarbonate particles are entrained by the compressed air as a particulate stream, whereby the dental surface is cleaned evenly, by mechanical means.
The AIR-FLOW system uses pressurized air, water and fine particles of sodium bicarbonate or aluminum trioxide.
Advantages of AIRFLOW are:
As the AIRFLOW device performs a microabrasion of the enamel, you will immediately notice the teeth whitening effect, which regains its brilliance and natural color.
